Keezhatheru Mariamman History
This Arulmigu Keezhatheru Mariamman Thirukkoil is near Chidambaram Town Bus Stand, Cuddalore District.
This town also had famous names like Permpatrapuliyur and Thillai in olden days. After then it has been called as Chidambaram. The reason for getting the name Chidambaram is because: The word ‘Chid’ in Tamil means Wisdom. ‘Ambaram’ means Sky. Chid + Ambaram = Chidambaram which means, God is permeated in the form of wisdom all over the sky. Chidambaram is famous for the dwelling of Akhaya (the sky) one of the Pancha Boothas.
In Chola Nadu, Thillayampathi was a very important place. Because through the Lake Veeranam in the West and through Poompuhar & Nagapattinam in the South East, the enemies could attack always. So, the security was tightened in Thillayampathi in an unusual way.
Oh..Our affectionate Mother saving this universe...!
Adhiparasakthi Devi...!
Devi pampering prosperous life...!
May you save all of us
Kind hearted Keezhatheru Mariamman thaye...!
Horse forces, Elephant forces, those who could handle bow and arrow, spies and those who are expert in handling swords mingled among the public and safe guarded the Chola Nadu by not allowing even a single creature to enter into it. Even then, Chera Nadu and Singala State were very much particular to spoil the resources and strength by doing witchcrafts and spells to them. After knowing these from the spies, Chola Nadu planned to solve that.
In Peruvudaiyar Temple of Tanjore, the capital of Chola Nadu and in Sri Nataraja Perumal Temple of Chidambaram special Yagas conducted. At the end of the Pooja, it was told that, to drive away from the witchcraft if powerful forces sent inside the Goddess Sakthi ales Devi, made idols and dedicate the idols on the four sides of Thillaiyampathi, even the wind of the enemies could not enter the Chola Nadu.
In the same way, the four idols of Devi were dedicated to the four boundaries of Thillaiyambathi. Goddess was decorated with flowers and all the residents gathered together and offered Pongal.
They prayed” Oh! Holy Mother, please save our soldiers who are staying in our place and guarding our State against all types of diseases, they should have sharp vision, their hands and legs should be strengthened, their shoulders should have strength, and they should not have any tiredness in their body and all they eat should be healthier.
On the North of Thillaiyampathi East Sri Thillaiyamman, on the South, Sri Vellanthaangiyamman, on the West, Sri Ellaiyamman and on the East, Sri Mariamman is taking care of this State. These four Sakthi Devis dwelling on the four sides of Thillaiyampathi are looking after not only the Chola Nadu but the whole world.
Since Sri Mariamman sits on the East and blesses and dwells in the Temple of Keezhatheru, she is called Keezhatheru Mariamman. Moreover, this Amman is considered to be powerful and Keezhatheru Mariamman Koil as a famous temple for prayer.
The Aspect of the Temple
In many Ambal temples have a Lion statue or Kazhu Maram opposite the shrine. But here is the highlight of the Nandhi statue in front of Ambal. Therefore, Shiva-Shakthi is revered as a powerful shrine.
Sitting in the Sanctum facing East with a knife, Udukkai and Snake in the right hands, holding Trident and Skull in the left hands, with the Monster’s head trampled under the feet and with the compassionate vision is the other incarnation of Ambal. On both laps, the form of a snake hooding is very famous.
